Creating a promotion plan for your book proposal is something many of my writers struggle with. And there is some fundamentally conflicting advice out there about what this part of your proposal should contain. Here are my thoughts on how to create a promotion plan that will convince a publisher to buy your book.
The Importance of the Promotion Plan
The hard truth about book publishing is that publishers have very little time and money to market your book for you. Unless you are a celebrity or someone who has written a series of successful books, most of the promotion is going to be up to you and you alone. Getting your head around that as soon as possible will help you go into this prepared.
And because most of the work is going to be up to you, publishers want to see that you not only understand this, but have a really solid plan for how you are going to sell the book so that the publisher will make money.
They also want to see that you are not completely pie-in-the-sky and that you have already done some work to create an audience.
